The tragically short life of Bonnie and Clyde.
When I went to fill the bird feeders early one morning, after being out of town for several days, I found two new residents in the feed bin. They were two very small brown mice, they were all eyes and whiskers. I thought how cute. I scooped them up in the 16 oz cup that I use for a scoop. They were very calm. I held them up to get a closer look. They looked right at me wiggling their whiskers. I thought for a moment two little mice in the feed bin whats the harm. Its as if the mice were reading my thoughts. They looked at me as if to say please lets us stay, then I had a thought of hundreds of mice filling my shed, at that moment they leap from the cup that I was holding them in and scurried off behind the toolboxes, rakes, shovels, and other miscellaneous tools.
The next morning they were back in the feed bin. I was determined to remove them. They were determined to stay. After a few minutes of chasing them around the 20 gallon bin with my 16 oz cup I caught one. I released him in the woods behind my house. I then went to retrieve the other mouse and released her in same place.
This morning while laying in bed half asleep, I thought, I probably did not release the mice far enough into the woods. I was looking forward to going to the shed to see if they found their way back.
Setting by the back door to greet me were Nikkei, (my beagle) and Ugly (my calico cat).
It was odd to see them setting side by side. When I looked down at their feet I notice the two mice, feet turned up and motionless. When Nikkei was satisfied that I had seen the mice. She bent picked up one of the mice and swallowed it whole.
